It was scheduled for 12;30pm and it was a 4 hour tour of the new House that George is building. I shot the crap out of it and when I was done I had sound and images that needed to be put to together for an audio sound show. The COO of the Yankees Lonn Trost gave the more that 75 media members and photographers the grand tour of the new baby. Up and down we all went and everywhere he took us was just another great moment to take a nice image of a new historic baseball stadium. John Munson and myself met up at his home in Manhattan and headed down together to City Hall. We got into position at 8:30am and waited on the podium til the parade down the Canyon of Heroes ended at City Hall. That was about 1:30pm. So the festivities began and as it moved along I was taking tight shots of all the participants. Well I do not know why by I had a thought that when Michael Strahan came up I was going to need a wider shot so I began shooting with my 70-210 when he began do the "stomp" and jumped up in the air. This was just like at the Super Bowl and I caught it again just like at the Super Bowl. So here are my 2 images of "The Stomp". As the GIANTS STOMPED THE PATRIOTS OUT!!!!!!

ESCAPEE RETURNED TO JFK AIRPORT.....

On January 10th the escaped prisoner from NJ was returned to the states via Mexico to JFK Airport. It went so smooth, the US Marshal's office helped amazingly as they kept us informed as to when and what door this perp was to come out at the Terminal at JFK. It all worked well as he was escorted to the car waiting. I got so close I was amazed and sent the pictures to the desk before he arrived to Westfield where the Star-Ledger had other photographers waiting. The day started off with the temperature in the low 20's at game time. I was prepared with many layers and my Northface McMurdo and I keep dry as the weather changed from bad to worst. As the 2nd quarter began the skys opened and rain which quickly turned to sleet and then hail as I was shooting this important game. In the images below you can see the weather and how they just kept playing. By the end of the game it was snowing and that was the fun part. Snow and Football perfect together. I sent all my images and made deadline. Then I headed to the airport which was another fun adventure. The flight was scheduled for 7 pm. In short I took off at 12:45am and got back home at 3 am. A long but fun day...........

YANKEES SEASON OVER !!!!

This was an image that pretty much defined the end of the Yankees season. I was dispatched to the steam pipe explosion from Newark. A quick 15 minute ride on most nights turned into a 1 hour and 30 minute ride. When I arrived at 7:30pm the daylight was fading fast and I had 20 minutes to make a picture for deadline. I parked at 36Th and 3rd and walked to the scene at 39Th and Lexington Ave. That was where I came upon this scene. I shot some images and moved them on my computer. I had them to the photo desk by 8:01pm. I then went back to the scene and it was now dark. I looked at this building on the corner of 39Th and Lex and buzzed all the apartments til one buzzed me in. I got on the elevator and went up to the top, it was a 7 story building and a roof that went outside, and with my 300mm shot this image at an 1/80 of a sec at 1250 iso and made the image and went back down the elevator and sent the image back to the office. It arrived by 8:38pm and made the inside big . I was very please to say the least and even told Rachel French, my night photo editor that that image was fuckin sweet, and she repeated it in the office. All in a days work .

To Flash or not to Flash...........

09/09/06: This was a funny night at the US OPEN Women's final. Maria Sharapova first lifts the trophy and the top of it falls off. I was shooting without flash and caught a sequence of the trophy coming apart at the top. If I had used flash I would not have caught every image as I saw later that many of the wire services only caught it after she had lost the top and not the whole expression. To add to this I continued to photograph with just the natural light of the event and she later hugs the trophy and I caught another photographers flash and it made for a nice image as well as she wins the 2006 US Open vs Justine Henin-Hardenne in the Women's Final in Queens, New York. It just goes to show sometimes using a flash to fill does not always pay off.

Happy 4th of July

7/4/03: The Macys 27th annual fireworks over the East River with the Queensboro Bridge in the foreground was taken by me in 2003 while in New York for the 4th of July. This was a great day and a cool set of images to make. It had only happened one other time in baseball (a double play at home plate) and Willie Randolph the Mets manager had seen them both. I was on Route 1&9 and I saw this truck on its side. The police where not there yet so I pulled up behind and got out. On the side of the road was the driver just sitting on the curb. I took a few frames and then the police and emergency vehicles began arriving. I stayed back a bit and let them do their work knowing that I had my gravy shot of the driver. When I got back to the office I souped the film (YES FILM!) and sent it over. To this day it hangs in the Star-Ledger office and I still remember the image well.

The Mets Just Missed!

10/19/06 This was a great assignment to be on. Game 7 Mets vs Cardinals. I was on assignment with fellow Star-Ledger Photogs Andy Mills, Chris Faytok and Noah Murray, as well as Sports Photo Editor Seth Siditsky. The game was back and forth, winner goes to the World Series. The Mets Endy Chavez grabs a homerun away from The Cardinals Scott Rolen to end the 6th inning with a double play in game 7 of the NLCS at Shea Stadium in Queens, NY. I was upstairs in the elevated position that night. The deadlines were tight. I got this image and immediately sent it to the paper. As I was sending it I got 2 IM's one from Seth the other from Steve Miller (photo editor in Newark office) Both saying did I get it and to send it. I said it is already in house as it was transmitted in about 45 seconds. This was a great catch and could have been a defining moment in the History of the Mets. However, later that night another Cardinal hit the game winning homer and then the Mets Carlos Beltran struck out to end the Mets chance of a World Series birth. This would have been the front page of sports but it was just an image in the paper that night as it meant nothing to the outcome of the game. You win some and you lose some. Oh Well!

The Cup is Lifted

6/14/94 This has to be one of the best events I have ever covered. The date was June 14, 1994. I was assigned this event. It was an electric night in Manhattan. The Rangers had not won a Stanley Cup since 1940 and the curse was lifted that night. I am a Rangers fan at heart. This was the one event that I have covered in all my years of covering sports and working in the newspaper industry that I felt like a fan as well. The Rangers had just won and every photographer was getting ready for the moment when the Stanley Cup was to be presented to the captain Mark Messier. Madison Square Garden was shaking. I had very little time to make this image as the deadlines were approaching. (We still shot film back then and we drove back to the office after an event). No Computers yet! I was beeped 911 about 2 minutes after I made this shot. That was the signal to get back to the office and get this image over to the paper. I high tailed out of the Garden and got in my car and drove back to Newark. The streets of Manhattan were very different that night. people were screaming and cheering about the Rangers. It was a cool feeling to be just driving the streets of Manhattan with my windows open and everyone outside was a Rangers fan. Well I got back to the office in time and this made the front page. It was just the 1st of many exciting moments at The Star-Ledger in my 17 plus years at the paper.
